VIAGRA was first studied as a medication for treating heart disease. During those studies, it was noted that blood flow to the male genitals was increased in patients taking the test drug. This increased blood flow helped men suffering from compromised sexual function achieve more satisfactory erection with appropriate sexual stimulation. Pfizer began making the drug available to the public after the approval by the FDA in March of 1998.

The studies done prior to the FDA approval showed remarkable results in men with various reasons for compromised sexual function. Nearly 90% of the men studied had clearly identified physical reasons for their problem. Close to 80% reported considerable improvement. Since the release of VIAGRA, the response from patients has been overwhelmingly positive. Some feedback can be sampled at bulletin boards and in chat rooms online.

VIAGRAis taken in the form of a blue diamond shaped tablet... usually in a dose of 50 mg.... about an hour before anticipated sexual activity. The drug can be expected to have the desired effect for 4 to 6 hours.

VIAGRA must not be taken if a patient is also taking organic nitrates, especially nitroglycerin, a drug commonly taken for relief by patients who have angina (intermittent chest pain).

The side effects of VIAGRA are unusual and generally minor. They include facial flushing, mild headache, nausea, nasal congestion, and a temporary blurring of the difference between blue and green. Throughout the studies few patients chose to discontinue the use of the medication because of side effects.

Generally speaking, there has been remarkable the success and patient acceptance of this medication during the studies, as well as in subsequent clinical use.
